I like big books and I can not lie
You other readers can’t deny
When a books on the shelf with a real big spine
And all the words up in your face
You get SPRUNG.
My recent trip to my library yielded an immense number of books that I am really interested in! A lot of these books have been on my wishlist for awhile. Now that my library magically had them, I can read them without the committment of a purchase. Living in a rural area means not being able to get new releases very often from the library so this haul is a testament of my perseverance and faith in my local library.
Here they are in no particular order:
The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey has been on my list since it released last year. This book has made waves (pun intended) through the book community. It is about the fifth wave of an alien invasion and follows a girl named Cassie as she tries to survive.
Drink Slay Love by Sarah Beth Durst is a book that I heard about from the booktube community on youtube. Unfortunately, I can not exactly remember who I heard it from. It follows a sixteen year old vampire named Pearl who, after being attacked, can withstand the sunlight.
I randomly found 13 Treasures by Michelle Harrison while browsing the stacks and was drawn to it because of the pretty cover. Come on. you know we all judge books by their covers. It is about a thirteen year old girl named Tanya that can see fairies that no one else can. This appears to be the first book in a trilogy.
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern has been on my to-be-read list for such a long time – ever since it was published in 2011! I was first drawn in by the beautiful cover while looking around in the bookstore. Then, I began hearing wonderful reviews about the book. THEN, one of my best friends recommended I read it! With her seal of approval, I knew that I wanted to read this book. I was so excited to see that my library actually had it. I have been instructed not to read the synopsis for optimal book enjoyment, but for the sake of this post I read a bit. It is about a mysterious circus that just arrives with no announcements and two magicians who are dueling against each other.
Another book recommendation from Booktube, The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater is the first book in a series. I first heard about the book from Bookables and then from PoloandbananasBOOKS. I really, really wanted to watch their reviews, but I knew I must read the book first. I really want to go into this book with no knowledge once-s0-ever, so I refuse to read the synopsis. You can check it out over at Goodreads.
Winger by Andrew Smith has also been making the Booktube rounds as it shows up on more and more readers shelves. The impressive cover and beautiful spine drew me in without knowing what the book was about. It follows Ryan, a fourteen year old, at a boarding school for rich kids. The books seems like a quick/easy read with large type and illustrations.
Firebirds Rising edited by Sharyn November was another book whose cover intriqued me. Upon closer investigation, I saw that it was an anthology of Science Fiction and Fantasy stories. I. Love. Anthologies! During college, we were mostly tasked with writing short stories in my creative writing workshops. I have now been conditioned to adore reading these shorter stories which I had not really been into prior.
Cinder and Scarlet by Marissa Meyer are the first and second books in the Lunar Chronicles. The third book, Cress, releases next month! I have wanted to read these books for quite some time. As a huge fairy tale fan, I love reading retellings – writing them too! I like reading other author’s interpretations of these classic stories. Cinder is about a cyborg “Cinderella” while Scarlet deals with “Red Riding Hood”.
After seeing ChapterStackss on Youtube talk about the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series, I picked up The Killing Dance by Laurell K. Hamilton. Two of my convention friends are also big fans of LKH and she is a frequent quest at one of my favorite conventions, Dragon*con. I had to pick up the sixth book in the series because it was the earliest book my library had. The series is about Anita Blake who is tasked with hunting and executing supernatural creatures who have broken the law. I also heard it gets really erotic and, well, I am all about that.
A series that has been on my radar for awhile is the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. I managed to pick up Lover Avenged and Lover At Last by J.R Ward at my library. This is Book 7 and Book 11 (respectively) from the series. The unfortunate thing about libraries is that they may not have all of a series, especially longer series. My local library is notorious for not having the first or even the second book of a series! So I typically have to jump in wherever I can. This is a paranormal romance series about a society of vampire warriors who live together and defend their race.
